MIRA - mixing distilled water and propylene glycol

Modified on Tue, 15 Oct at 9:58 AM

If needed, you can put a mixture of distilled water and propylene glycol.

The mix ratio is about 15:1 (water: antifreeze). Ethelene glycol or automotive antifreeze should not be used.

Automotive anti freezes can be used but this should be only used as a last resort.

The water should be changed with new, clean (distilled or deionized) water every 6 months if possible.

Propylene Glycol can be bought at Canadian Tire. Here is a picture:

See the picture of the chiller located at the back of the machine. Once you have this 15:1 mixture made, open the cap and fill here (red arrow points to fill point):

Fill to the green section on the chiller.
Power on the machine and let the mixture circulate through the machine. (with the chiller on/ machine powered up, the mixture will circulate)

Note: Algae growth can arise in the cooling liquid and an algaecide may be needed.
Example product: Tetra Algae Control algaecide

STORING YOUR MIRA IN COLD TEMPERATURES FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME:
YOU CAN MIX IN MORE PYROPLENE GLYCOL THAN  THE 15:1 MIXTURE SUGGESTED ABOVE. PUT IN THIS MIXTURE, AND THEN CIRCULATE IT THROUGH BY TURNING ON THE MIRA. ONCE IT HAS CIRCULTED THROUGH, DRAIN THE CHILLER TO GET OUT AS MUCH WATER MIXTURE AS POSSIBLE. YOU CAN HELP FACILITATE THIS BY SPRAYING COMPRESSED AIR IN THE CHILLER INLET. THIS WILL SHOOT AIR THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND MORE LIQUID WILL DRAIN OUT THE CHILLER DRAIN SPOUT.

JUST MAKE SURE TO PUT IN NORMAL DISTILLED WATER WHEN YOU USE THE MACHINE AGAIN.

ONCE YOUR MACHINE IS OUT OF THE COLDER TEMPERATURES, YOU CAN COMPLETELY DRAIN THE CHILLER WATER AND REPLACE IT WITH DISTILLED WATER AGAIN.
